Sheep Town Theatre Company is delighted to announce that as of January 2007 we will be the new resident theatre company at Skipton’s Mart Theatre. This will involve five shows during 2007 and regular workshops for both adults and children.

Sheep Town Theatre Company takes its name from the rural community in which it is based, Skipton in the Yorkshire Dales. Skipton’s original name, dating back to the seventh century was Sceptone, which translated means Sheeptown. A name given to the town because of its thriving woollen trade and subsequent large population of sheep. It wasn’t until after the Norman Conquest in 1066 that the town eventually became known as Skipton.
Sheep Town Theatre Company aims to take its productions to the community by performing in various venues. Although some of these are traditional theatre venues we intend to perform in non-theatre venues, such as cattle markets, pubs, community centres, churches etc. With working with the community on projects we hope to bring to the stage stories of local life and people that may otherwise go untold or be consigned to history along with highlighting local issues that often go unnoticed by the wider community.
We also offer education and training through our workshops and courses. Sheep Town offers youth theatre courses as well as acting courses for adults along side workshops on our plays and the themes and issues raised, as well as various other subjects including improvisation, stand-up comedy and voice. Our company consists of trained actors with industry experience along with both teaching experience and educational qualifications.
